Born from a
critical need

The HUB didn’t begin with a blueprint. It began with a mother’s search — and a community’s unmet need that was impossible to ignore.

Our Purpose

Just as necessity is the mother of invention…

"I decided to create the exact community my son and others deserved."
Valerie Billmire
Chair · The HUB

When Valerie Billmire began searching for housing options for her adult son with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) in Whatcom County, Washington, she was deeply disheartened. Not only was there a severe shortage of local options, but the available placements were hours away, lacked any sense of community — and shockingly, most were not wheelchair accessible.

Frustrated by the lack of local solutions, Valerie decided to create the exact community her son and others deserved. There was just one catch: she had a mountain of great ideas and absolutely no money.

"Today, we are still at the beginning of this journey and I'm so excited to watch this vision come to life. (Feel free to go to the donation page. Go ahead, I'll wait. Take your time.)"

As a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The HUB is about creating an intentional community within the local community. It means having a secure place to call home while remaining a visible, active part of society.

The HUB is a vision of community inclusion — where we can turn a critical need into a beautiful, vibrant, safe, and welcoming home in which everyone belongs and is an active part of the local community.

Our Model Is Built on
Two Core Principles

True belonging happens in two directions — within the walls of home, and out in the world.

Internal Belonging

True belonging happens in two directions — within the walls of home, and out in the world.

External Integration

Too often, adults with IDD living in traditional neighborhoods are physically present but socially isolated. We address that disparity head-on. The HUB ensures our residents aren’t just living alongside a community — they are actively embraced by it, valued, and involved in it.
